Yannick Bolasie was among many who praised Willy Gnonto on social media after the Leeds United winger’s performance in Friday’s win over Bristol City.

With Daniel James ailing, Willy Gnonto earned a rare Championship start this season. The Italian has unable to recapture his form from his initial burst into the first squad last season.

But it was the 20-year-old who scored a huge goal at Ashton Gate. Leeds were largely dominating over the Robins. However, Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter were rejected in front of the net.

But when Junior Firpo’s pass found its way through to Gnonto thanks to a touch from Patrick Bamford at the opening of the second half, the forward was able to send the goalie the wrong way and score.

Gnonto made it plain how important the objective was to him. And it might be a huge goal in the promotion battle, with Daniel Farke’s side failing to expand their lead at any point.

Forward ready to step up in the promotion race.

It would be a huge boost for Leeds if Gnonto regained his best form. The promotion race has heated up to the point where no team appears to be able to slip up.

Obviously, James and Summerville have been two of our most valuable players this season. As a result, it will be difficult for players such as Gnonto and Jaidon Anthony to establish themselves in the starting lineup consistently.

However, it was Gnonto who scored the winning goal on Friday night. And some of his sprinting should give Farke confidence that he can step up while James is absent.

The fact that Leeds has so many game changers in its ranks is surely a positive sign. And hopefully, the best of Gnonto is yet to come this season.
