Former Everton manager Keith Wyness cannot imagine the Toffees or Nottingham Forest might be relegated five days after the Premier League’s last round of fixtures.

Speaking on the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old, who was CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now runs a football consultancy that advises elite clubs, insisted the Premier League is a “laughing stock” after tampering with the table’s integrity.

Nottingham Forest were docked four points on Monday (18 March) for failing to comply with the Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR), dropping them to the bottom three.

Everton, who are four points from relegation, have already been docked six points and will face a separate PSR penalty next week.

The Premier League has set May 24 as a backup date for any appeals from the two teams.

Premier League ‘is a laughing stock’ after ‘mindboggling’ latest, according to Wyness

Wyness said it’s “mindboggling” that a preliminary table may be in place by the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

He told Football Insider’s Insider Track podcast: “It appears like the lawyers’ arguments are all being fabricated to achieve a specific goal.

“It’s just really confused; there’s no obvious organization.

“Letting everything be subjective turns everything into a joke.

“We’re discussing the most crucial thing for clubs. It means relegation from the Premier League.

“The havoc they’re wreaking on the league table’s overall integrity is unbelievable. We’re the laughing stock.

“There are at least two asterisks in the table presently. We know that if Forest or Everton appeal, the standings can only be changed when the season ends on May 24.

    “It’s mindboggling.”
