Joe Donnohue reports that Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto is not ready to start for Daniel Farke’s side against Sunderland at Elland Road.
On Tuesday (9 April), a Yorkshire Evening Post journalist said that the Italian winger will be fit enough to sit on the bench against the Black Cats, but will not be named in the starting lineup.
The 20-year-old made his first appearance since the March international break in the Whites’ 2-1 loss to Coventry, coming off the bench for the final six minutes at the CBS Arena, and he will have to settle with a similar cameo this time around.
Donnohue wrote in the Yorkshire Evening Post, “Willy Gnonto is not quite ready from the start again, so it’ll be James on Leeds’ right flank.”
Will Wilfried Gnonto be ready to start for Leeds United against Sunderland at Elland Road?
Gnonto’s season at Elland Road has been extremely challenging, as the Italian winger has dealt with a multitude of issues both on and off the pitch while attempting to recapture his Championship form.
After attempting to force a transfer in the summer window, the 20-year-old had a sluggish start to the season before putting up an exceptional performance in the run-up to the March international break under Farke.
However, Dan James and Crysencio Summerville have been in excellent form for Leeds this season, making it extremely difficult for Gnonto to get into the team and maintain a consistent spot in the starting XI.
If the Italian winger continues to impress from the bench in the Championship, Farke will have a decision to make for the balance of the season at Elland Road, but it will not be easy for the Leeds United winger.
