Wilfried Gnonto has spoken out about his dispute with Leeds United at the start of the 2023/24 season, after almost being forced to leave Elland Road.
Following the Whites’ relegation to the Championship, the Italian winger refused to play against Birmingham City in the season’s second game, causing controversy with Daniel Farke.
His representatives pressed the “nuclear” button, submitting a formal transfer request to chairman Paraag Marathe after Gnonto missed three matches before apologizing. [Live From Leeds]
Gnonto told Leeds Live on Tuesday (21 May): “I remember, in August, being alone thinking about these types of moments.” I was feeling low, but this was my motivation.
“At the outset of the season, I was wondering what could have happened at the end of the season. It’s great to be in this circumstance and position right now. I simply want to give myself and the team the prize we deserve.
“It’s critical for a player to feel trusted, and I believe the coach has done this with everyone, to be fair. He’s been quite fair.
“Everyone has had their chances. At some time, I probably felt like I needed someone to simply come and be honest. When we talk about other people, such as the coach, Stuart Dallas, Coops [Liam Cooper], Cree [Summerville], and Glen [Kamara], so many players approached me and helped me a lot.
“I believe my confidence is visible because I am a confident guy, but you have different moments throughout the season. And during times when I didn’t feel so confident, I’m grateful to everyone on this team.
“I just want to achieve our goal and keep going and see what’s going to happen in the future.”
Wilfried Gnonto transforms from zero to hero at Leeds United.
Gnonto has undergone a remarkable transformation this season, going from almost leaving the club to becoming one of Farke’s most crucial players.
Despite Dan James’ amazing season, the 20-year-old has taken over in recent weeks and maintained his place in the starting lineup, even when the Welshman returns from injury.
Gnonto has nine goals and three assists in all competitions, making it even more thrilling that the youngster still has a lot of room to grow.
It is unusual to see such a dramatic reversal for a football player. However, he is one of the most popular figures at Elland Road and will be looking to repay the supporters in the Championship play-off final.
Leeds are poised to meet Southampton at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, May 26, in a match that could propel the club back into the Premier League.
If that were the case, Gnonto would have played a huge role after nearly leaving last summer.
