Leeds United were dominant in their 2-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Friday night.
Leeds United won their first Championship game on Friday night, defeating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Hillsborough.
Brenden Aaronson put the visitors ahead on 24 minutes after Mateo Joseph was denied a goal by a last-ditch tackle. The ball was recycled by the American, who made no errors.
After the break, Joseph provided an excellent pass that allowed Dan James to dink the ball over James Beadle, securing the three points. Here’s what Leeds Live learned from the victory.
Farke’s not-too-secret message
Daniel Farke was keen to highlight the need for more transfers in his post-match press conference, but he had already done so before a ball was kicked in anger. Alex Cairns and Karl Darlow, both goalkeepers, were put to the bench, along with 16-year-old Sam Chambers.
Farke’s options are limited, and this needs to change before Friday’s deadline.
Leeds discovers its own Carson.
While Cairns’ inclusion on the bench sparked concerns about squad depth, Farke was keen to emphasise how his involvement in the team helped Leeds win three points. His professionalism is said to be an essential factor in the dressing room, similar to why Pep Guardiola keeps Scott Carson at the Etihad Stadium.
It may be ignored, but having a player who can lift spirits and raise standards will only benefit the Whites.
Joseph’s time is approaching.
All Joseph lacked today was a goal, which explains why Farke is sticking with him despite the Spaniard’s lack of scoring for Leeds this season. He was everywhere yesterday night, causing havoc for the Wednesday defence.
More calmness in the second half would have allowed him to break his duck for the season, but it is coming and it will only be a matter of time until it is completed.
Gnonto is ready for Ramazan.
Largie Ramazani is anticipated to make his debut next weekend, playing on the left wing. Any concerns about moving Willy Gnonto to centre to create place for the winger were dismissed by the Owls.
His movement is being improved on at the training ground, and it is plainly effective. When he was dropped to central, Wednesday’s defence struggled to contain him, and it will be interesting to watch how he performs in that No.10 role in the future.
Meslier Warning
Leeds had a fantastic night overall, but Illan Meslier’s performances from crosses served as a warning. On a handful of times, he could have caught the ball to relieve pressure, but instead chose to punch, much to the displeasure of the away fans.
A minor blip on an otherwise fantastic night.
