RB Leipzig’s manager, Marco Rose, was critical of his team after their Champions League loss to Liverpool on Wednesday evening.
Marco Rose blamed his RB Leipzig players for their Champions League defeat at home to Liverpool. Darwin Nunez’s first-half goal was enough to secure the Reds a 1-0 win in Germany on Wednesday night, extending their perfect start to the campaign.
Leipzig, on the other hand, has lost all three games and was outplayed for long stretches by Arne Slot’s side before failing to capitalise on many spells of pressure in the final stages.
Rose thinks the Bundesliga team fell short in key areas of their game.
“We conceded a goal with Liverpool’s first chance,” remarked Leipzig’s manager. “Then there were times when we had to endure some hardship. However, we are also responsible for this.
“I didn’t like how we handled the ball in various phases. We started the game well but then threw up too many balls, had too little rhythm, and kept encouraging Liverpool to switch, forcing us to rush after them.
“In the end, we scored two offside goals and had a golden chance through Sesko. You just have to score at that level if you want to get anything out of it, because there aren’t many.”
Leipzig’s former Liverpool goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi agreed, citing the need for a streak of good stops while the visitors were on top.
“In the end, we had a few good chances to equalise,” Gulacsi added. “Overall, we were really sloppy in the final third, losing the ball several times. That’s why we couldn’t go deep against them. That explains why there were so many counter-attacks.
“With a little luck, we could have been able to get a point. We don’t have much luck in the Champions League.”
And Leipzig defender Willi Orban, who averted giving what appeared to be a clear penalty by tripping Nunez inside the box, said: “We kept up nicely, but this is Liverpool, one of the best teams in the world. We did not defend consistently enough, nor were we precise enough with the ball in the final third.
“But the basic line was that the performance was acceptable. We are currently unable to be present in crucial times against the Champions League’s elite clubs. But we have a young team, and some of them are playing their first Champions League games.
