Paul Robinson is overjoyed with the “fantastic” news that Liam Cooper has been offered a new contract at Leeds United.
According to Beren Cross [27 June], the 32-year-old’s departure is not a foregone conclusion this summer, despite his contract expiring at the end of last month.
However, the uncertainty surrounding his Elland Road future has sparked interest from a number of Championship clubs, with the Lancashire Telegraph suggesting [12 July] that he is willing to accept a wage reduction to join Blackburn Rovers.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson stated: “I believe Liam Cooper is in talks to prolong his time at Elland Road, or at least I hope so. Looking at the roster, whether Max Wober returns to the side or not, he has a lot to make up for.
“He is one of the players who is likely to continue, although the roster will be reorganized. From Cooper’s perspective, the question is if he wants to play football on a regular basis, which he does not under Daniel Farke.
“He’s at a point in his career where he’s quite content, comfortable, and willing to do that. At the present, assuming it has lasted this long, we believe he is in talks to prolong his stay at Elland Road, which is excellent news.
Liam Cooper is in talks to prolong his stay with Leeds United.
Cooper made only eight Championship starts last season, with Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu partnering up in defence, keeping Pascal Struijk out of the starting lineup.
The central defender has earned the opportunity to make a decision on his future after making 284 appearances for the Whites since joining from Chesterfield in 2014, a 10-year stint.
Of course, there will be a lot of grief if the Scot decides to leave Elland Road this summer, but Robinson believes there is still hope at the end of the tunnel.
