USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter has stated that he is disappointed Nottingham Forest has not selected Gio Reyna.
The manager has spoken with The Athletic.
So, what has Berhalter said about Forest’s signing of Reyna in January? Let’s look more closely.
What Gregg Berhalter has said about Forest winger Gio Reyna
So far, Reyna’s loan term has been unsuccessful, with the 21-year-old playing only 39 minutes.
Reyna joined Forest on loan from Dortmund for the remainder of the season in January.
However, his arrival has coincided with some excellent form from both Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga.
That has reduced his playing time, and Berhalter now faces a conundrum ahead of the upcoming international break.
He believes Forest has a pretty talented player in Reyna and suggests that he be used more.
He told The Athletic, “We know Gio’s a creative player.” We know he’s an excellent player for the final pass.
“And you know, we have to see what he can do in terms of workload, how long he could last in the field because he hasn’t been playing, but we also see other options as well.”
Reyna looks like an odd addition for Nuno Espirito Santo.
Reyna appeared to be a promising young player for the Forest, but it’s difficult to see him receiving many opportunities today.
Now it appears that Reyna is counting on injuries to earn an opportunity to flourish for the team.
With Reyna out of action for now, USMNT head coach Berhalter will be faced with a conundrum.
Forest needed to bolster its attacking options in January, and having Reyna on the bench certainly helps.
The player may be apprehensive at the moment, wondering if he made the correct decision by signing with Forest.
