Anthony Gordon was sent off in Newcastle United’s FA Cup defeat to Brighton at St James’ Park.
Wayne Rooney believes the usage of VAR contributed to Anthony Gordon’s dismissal in Newcastle United’s 2-1 FA Cup fifth round defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Magpies’ star was issued a straight red card in the 83rd minute at St James’ Park after colliding with Jan Paul van Hecke. Referee Anthony Taylor had already blown for offside when Gordon tussled with the Brighton centre-back and pushed him in the head with both hands.
Gordon replied by laughing at van Hecke, who was on the floor, before a push by Joao Pedro brought both sets of players together. Gordon was subsequently issued his marching orders, which surprised him.
The 24-year-old will now face a three-match ban for aggressive conduct, missing the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool in just under two weeks.
However, former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney believes the incident could have been prevented if the linesman had called Alexander Isak offside earlier. Rooney believes the delay was caused by VAR being in operation.
“He just lashes out,” Rooney told the BBC (via ChronicleLive). “This is where I believe if the linesman raises his flag, none of this will happen. Now they’re waiting for the VAR to come in and almost referee the game for them, but if he raises his flag, that won’t happen.”
Will Newcastle United appeal Anthony Gordon’s red card?
Gordon will serve a three-game penalty unless Newcastle files a successful appeal.
When asked if an appeal will be filed, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe replied, “Yes, of course.” I believe that if we analyze the occurrence and determine that there are grounds for it, we will proceed without hesitation.”
