Virgil van Dijk is in the final year of his Liverpool contract.
Virgil van Dijk admits he has ‘no idea’ about his future with both club and country.
The defender’s Euro 2024 campaign ended in heartache as Holland lost 2-1 to England in the semi-finals. Ollie Watkins scored a stoppage-time winner to propel the Three Lions to their second consecutive Euro final. They will plan Spain in Berlin on Sunday.
Holland took the lead in the seventh minute thanks to Xavi Simons’ fizzling shot. However, England controversially leveled on 18 minutes with a penalty from Harry Kane. It was granted following a VAR review, which determined that Denzel Dumfries had caught Three Lions captain Kane while shooting. Many believe Dumfries attempted to stop the shot.
Then, just as the game appeared to be heading into extra time, Watkins produced a spectacular moment that stunned the Netherlands.
Van Dijk recently turned 33 and has just one year left on his Liverpool deal. The Reds captain has yet to sign fresh terms at Anfield, and new sporting director Richard Hughes has said that negotiations with van Dijk, Mo Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold will stay private.
However, van Dijk is undecided whether he would continue to play for Liverpool after 2025, or if he will retire from international sport.
“After such a season, where all sorts of things happened and also such a tournament where all sorts of things happened, where I myself also got all sorts of things thrown at me, then this just hurts,” van Dijk stated in accordance with VI.
“I give my all to win, and it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s finished. Especially in the second half, I had a sense he’d fall on the other side. However, Watkins may have been given too much space and finishes well.
“I have no notion (about his future). This summer, I’ll carefully consider what I want at the club and international level. Then we’ll go for it again, but not until we recover from this.”
Regarding referee Felix Zwayer’s performance, van Dijk said, “This is not the time to discuss anything. I believe this was not his finest match, but referees sometimes make mistakes. We all talk about respect and communication, but it would be nice if people who make mistakes accepted responsibility and came here to explain what went well and what did not.”
