Leeds United will be upset after the EFL declared that they don’t have the authority to impose a points deduction on Leicester this season.
The Premier League announced this month that the Foxes could face a points loss if they return to the top division after breaking PSR regulations last season, when they were demoted to the Championship.
However, others have called for Leicester to be punished points this season, with the race for promotion between themselves, Ipswich, and Leeds United leaving only one point separating the top three with four games remaining.
However, in a statement issued on Friday (12 April), the EFL announced that following a hearing, it was determined that they do not have the authority to impose a points deduction this season for the allegations presented against Leicester.
Why will Leeds United be upset because Leicester City cannot be deducted points?
Finally, the accusations were for a period while Leicester was in the Premier League, which they violated in the year they were demoted.
This season, they are said to have stayed within their restrictions and rules, but the reality is that they might now advance to the Premier League at the expense of another team and then begin the season with minus points.
That seems unjust to teams like Leeds and Ipswich, who have fought hard all season, whilst Leicester will essentially face a delayed punishment if found guilty.
A points deduction introduced this season, as it was for Everton and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, would put Leeds and Ipswich in a considerably stronger position to move up.
Leeds will be irritated by the situation, but the EFL’s lack of options exemplifies the current position of the English game in terms of financial charges and FFP laws.
