Leeds United could sign Matt O’Riley from Celtic if they are promoted to the Premier League, according to Paul Robinson.
Carlton Palmer recently indicated that Celtic might consider selling the goalscoring midfielder if offered between £20 and £25 million, having previously rejected a £10 million deal from Atletico Madrid.
The EFL commentator claimed Leeds are one of the clubs keeping an eye on O’Riley, who scored his 13th Scottish Premiership goal of the season in Celtic’s 3-3 draw with Rangers on Sunday (7 April).
While a move is doubtful if Leeds remain in the Championship, Robinson believes a deal for O’Riley, as well as previous fan favourite Kalvin Phillips, is possible if promoted.
“He’s proven he can do it in the Champions League with Celtic and has been consistent this season. His record speaks for itself, and he’d be a valuable addition to the team.
“I’d also like to see Kalvin Phillips return to Leeds, as whispers have started. The fact is, can Leeds afford his wages? And the fact is probably not, considering his current situation at Manchester City.
“Then it’s his personal goal vs his pay. O’Riley would be a very excellent deal, or two very good ones with Phillips if Leeds can complete both.”
Leeds United’s Summer Transfer Plans
As Robinson points out, it is nearly hard to forecast exactly what type of player Leeds will be able to sign this summer.
It goes without saying that promotion to the Premier League will allow United to attract many more talented players than if they remained in the second division.
The club will most likely already have a couple of transfer shortlists prepared to work on once the season is over.
And, in terms of midfield targets, O’Riley should be at the top of the list if Leeds are promoted, even ahead of Phillips.
In a stellar season, the 23-year-old has 13 goals and 11 assists in 31 league appearances for Celtic.
Before fans can get thrilled about adding O’Riley to the squad, Leeds must first fulfill the task of achieving an immediate return to the top flight.
