Update: Paul Merson believes the 22-year-old isn’t talented enough to start for Tottenham.

Paul Merson criticized Ange Postecoglou for choosing Brennan Johnson over Dejan Kulusevski against Everton, claiming that the Welshman is not ready to start for Tottenham.

Johnson’s first six months at Spurs since his big-money move from Nottingham Forest last summer have not been particularly spectacular.

The winger’s brilliance is on full display, with the teenager demonstrating multiple glimpses of the ability and work ethic that convinced Ange Postecoglou to bring him to the club.

The 22-year-old has demonstrated his blistering pace, remarkable crossing skills, and utility in counter-pressing, but he has yet to tie together a few regular performances to indicate that he has actually arrived at the club.

Should Brennan Johnson start for the Spurs?

Merson believes Johnson should be utilized mostly as an impact substitute by Postecoglou for the time being, rather than as starter.
