Lee Bowyer has been happy with Willy Gnonto’s recent efforts for Leeds United as they seek promotion.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (23 February, 08:55am), the former Whites midfielder stated that the Italian international was not the player he expected at the start of the season and was “disappointed” with him.
However, he claimed that the 20-year-old winger has “come alive” recently and has been scoring goals alongside Crysencio Summerville, whom he says has been “unreal” at Elland Road.
“The thing I’ve been happy with Leeds of late, obviously Summerville’s been unreal for Leeds this season scoring goals, but Gnonto has just come alive,” Bowyer told the BBC.
“At the start of the season, he wasn’t the player I expected him to be, which disappointed me. However, he has now risen to the occasion and been scoring goals. I believe Leeds are in a really strong position right now.”
Willy Gnonto could be important to Leeds United’s promotion campaign.
Gnonto had a terrible opening few months of the season after seeing his move away from Leeds rejected and then losing his position in the team due to injury.
The winger had to sit back and watch Summerville and Dan James put in standout displays as he was forced to settle for bench outings.
However, he has seized an opportunity to start in recent weeks at Elland Road.
The Italian has now scored four goals and provided one assist in his previous five appearances, and he appears to have cemented down a regular role in the squad.
Daniel Farke will be hoping he can sustain his present form over the next several months, as he might play an important role in the Whites’ promotion back to the Premier League.
