Mohamed Salah grabbed extra attention for Liverpool on Sunday.
The Egypt international scored and assisted in another Premier League game, his 11th of the season, bringing his total to 25 goals and 16 assists in just 27 matches.
Jamie Carragher, Micah Richards, Daniel Sturridge, and Roy Keane discussed the Liverpool No.11’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or while praising him on Sky Sports.
Carragher, perhaps stupidly, joked that Mohamed Salah had never played in a major international event, scoffing when the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was presented to him in response, a moment to which Richard Keys has now reacted.
Richard Keys blasts Jamie Carragher over AFCON remark
In case you missed it, the man from Bootle told Sky Sports: “I think the problem (is) the fact he’s with Egypt, and he’s probably not playing in the major tournament as such or maybe got a great chance of winning.”
Carragher responded “oh my God” and scoffed when Richards correctly called him out on the comment, and Keys has now weighed in on his blog.
The beIN SPORTS expert stated, “Never mind the PL’s (Premier League) best ever; Mo Salah might just be Liverpool’s best ever, despite the fact that he’s never participated in a major competition. Seriously. What a lack of knowledge. Unforgiveable ignorance.
“Time and again down the years I’ve referenced the arrogance of so-called experts that live and work within the borders of the U.K. who think nothing beyond their territory matters.”
Mohamed Salah should be outraged!
Keys is spot on.
Carragher, who believes Antoine Semenyo might replace Salah, was wrong to criticise AFCON in this way.
After all, Salah, whom Luis Diaz referred to as a machine, cannot help but be African; the Liverpool little.11 has little chance of appearing in the Euros or the Copa America, and Egypt will always struggle to win the World Cup, so why should the quality of AFCON be used against him?
It is unquestionably an important competition.
