Leeds United’s nightmarish connection with the play-offs continued on Sunday, when they were defeated by Southampton in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium.
Thousands upon thousands of Leeds fans went on the city, praying that history will be erased and not repeat again.
However, it was not to be for Daniel Farke and his team, as Leeds were defeated in a play-off final at Wembley or The Millennium Stadium for the fourth time in their existence.
For many fans, it was difficult to accept, not simply because they had been defeated in another play-off final or would be spending another season in England’s second tier.
But the majority of their players, with the exception of Dan James, did not show up, which will hurt much more.
When the final whistle rang, you could see the elation and joy in the Southampton players’ eyes because they celebrated like any team would in their situation, and even Harry Maguire added salt to the wounds.
However, several Leeds players had their heads down and appeared distraught since a 49-game season had finished with absolutely nothing.
Troy Deeney was on the pitch at Wembley Stadium and was dissatisfied with what he saw from some of Leeds’ players after the game ended.
The former striker, who gained promotion to the Premier League with Watford, chastised ‘four or five players’ for ‘laughing and joking’ after the game, as he told Sky Sports Football.
Deeney was not afraid to discuss his personal struggles at the home of football, including losing 6-0 to Manchester City in an FA Cup final, so he speaks from experience.
Leeds United players at Wembley
“When I look at Leeds, the last month flattered to deceive where you want your big players, your leaders to step up and they went missing,” Deeney stated.
“I won’t mention names, but you’re standing and you can see how people respond afterwards. Manchester City defeated me 6-0 at Wembley. That was a drubbing. You must stand in a line and congratulate your opponents, as the better team won. Show some humility and respect.
“Four or five of them over the other side laughing and joking.”
Recovering from another playoff final defeat
Under Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds also lost a play-off semi-final against Derby County before winning the title the following season.
Farke gained promotion with Norwich in his second season.
Many would see that as a positive sign for the club, but you believe these are distinct circumstances.
In comparison to other teams, there is likely to be more of a clearout this summer, with key players leaving, making Farke’s job more harder.
That is why it is critical for the club to keep him, as it would not be surprising if, in addition to Crysencio Summerville, more than a few players left.
