Newcastle United have suffered another blow to their recruitment hopes, with one target choosing a move to Tottenham.
The Magpies have yet to complete a deal this month, with the club concerned about violating the Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Before the market even opened, Eddie Howe predicted that January would be quiet, with Newcastle planning to conduct no business this month in order to bolster the summer budget.
Newcastle has kept an eye on the market, and adding a right winger is a high goal, especially because Miguel Almiron is expected to leave for MLS. With just under a week remaining, fresh signings cannot be ruled out, but it appears Newcastle’s primary focus is on the summer.
Newcastle may look for a midfielder in the summer, with Manchester City’s James McAtee attracting interest. Another player on the club’s radar is Lille’s Angel Gomes.
Angel Gomes likes Tottenham move over Newcastle.
Howe has already conceded that center midfield is Newcastle’s strongest position, but with Sean Longstaff’s future uncertain, it is an area that might be strengthened this summer.
Newcastle’s interest in Angel Gomes stretches back to September, when the 24-year-old was in the final year of his contract with Lille. He is poised to become a free agent this summer.
Despite interest from Tottenham, Manchester United, and Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle are reportedly looking to sign Gomes in 2025.
According to GiveMeSport, Gomes “wants to join” Tottenham, not Newcastle or any other interested club.
Gomes would have wanted high salaries at Newcastle anyhow, so any agreement would have hurt the club’s already precarious PSR position.
Paul Mitchell is putting Newcastle up for a huge summer.
New sporting director Paul Mitchell did not make a good first impression at St James’ Park after a disappointing end to the summer transfer window, which was followed by a public spat with Howe.
However, with Almiron on his way out and players such as Lloyd Kelly, Longstaff, and Wilson up for sale, Newcastle is finally beginning to address their PSR issues.
Additionally, Newcastle will receive a £73m PSR boost in the summer as their losses from the 2021/22 season drop out of the three-year calculation.
It means that Newcastle should have a relatively significant summer budget to invest in Howe’s team.
Howe is likely to qualify for Europe this season, and Newcastle are currently on course to return to the Champions League. A return to European football will only make it simpler for the club to acquire top-tier talent.
