As the final fortnight of the January transfer window approaches, Leeds United is being associated with a variety of players, including Ben Davies.
The 31-year-old defender is in the final six months of his Tottenham deal, which is thought to be paid a stunning £100,000 per week. Davies had been hurt but was still in position to face Arsenal.
Leeds have previously been connected to Davies. Leeds are reportedly ‘pushing hard’ to sign Davies this month, with a ‘cut-price deal’ on the table given his contract issue with Ange Postecoglou’s team.
Davies would become the sixth Wales international on the books at Elland Road, joining Karl Darlow, Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon, Dan James, and Charlie Crew, who has recently joined Doncaster on loan.
Ben Jacobs shares Tottenham star Ben Davies’ stance on the move.
It would be a coup to get Davies. A player with nearly 350 Tottenham appearances and only eight away from obtaining his 100th Wales cap. Davies can play both centre and left back.
However, with Leeds still in the Championship and Davies expected to draw significant interest in the future, a deal is far from complete. According to Ben Jacobs of The View podcast, Davies is open to a move.
“Davies is similar to Buendia in that he is willing to join Leeds and temporarily drop down to the Championship. But he understands that if he leaves for free, Premier League clubs will be interested.
What Brennan Johnson said about Tottenham’s Ben Davies.
A move to Elland Road would allow Davies to reconcile with five of his Wales teammates as well as one of his closest football friends. Joe Rodon played with Davies at Tottenham and Wales.
However, one of Tottenham’s Wales internationals, Brennan Johnson, once stated that he has never seen Davies play poorly: “He can adapt.” He is quite solid. “I’ve never seen him play poorly.”
Leeds will need left-back cover, especially since Sam Byram is only on a one-year contract at Elland Road. Leeds may need to be promoted before making a deal.
