Tottenham Hotspur ‘On the Verge’ of Signing Striker with Just One Goal This Season – Report

Tottenham’s pursuit of Brian Brobbey: A Striking Decision?

As the January transfer window closes, Tottenham Hotspur appears to be on the verge of making an unexpected signing. According to a recent TeamTalk rumor, Tottenham are close to signing Ajax striker Brian Brobbey. This move comes as the North London club steps up its quest for a new number nine following Dominic Solanke’s knee injury. However, Brobbey’s current form may not excite Spurs fans.

    Evaluating Tottenham’s Striking Options

Tottenham’s need for offensive reinforcements has become urgent. Even before Solanke’s unlucky training ground injury, which sidelined him for six weeks, his Premier League goal total of seven was disappointing, though his overall play has received some appreciation. The club has been associated with numerous forwards, including Liam Delap, Jonathan David, and Santiago Gimenez, but it appears that Brian Brobbey of Ajax is the key goal as we near the February 3 deadline for new signings.

Brobbey, a 22-year-old Netherlands international, with 52 goals and 26 assists in 148 appearances for Ajax. However, this season has been especially difficult for him, with only three goals in 29 appearances across all competitions, including only one in 17 league matches. Such numbers could not fulfill manager Ange Postecoglou’s expectations who is expecting for a substantial rise in the goal-scoring department.

    Brobbey’s Market Value and Potential

Despite the disappointing season, Ajax rates Brobbey at over €30 million and hopes for a straight sale or a loan-to-buy agreement. Brobbey, who came from Ajax’s famed junior program, demonstrated his promise when he made his striking debut in 2020, scoring against Fortuna Sittard. Last season, after a brief stint with RB Leipzig, he returned to Ajax and scored 18 goals and assisted 10 times in 30 Eredivisie games. However, he has struggled to maintain such form in the current season.

    Competition for Brobbey’s signature.

Brobbey is attracting interest from more than just Tottenham. Premier League team West Ham and Serie A club Roma are also interested in signing a new striker, each with their own requirements. West Ham, who are dealing with injuries to their primary attackers, reportedly offered Brobbey a hefty weekly wage to bring him to the London Stadium. Roma, aiming to strengthen their attack after selling Eldor Shomurodov, are interested in Brobbey as a rotational option for Artem Dovbyk.

Regardless of the competition, Tottenham’s search for a new striker is pressing, and Brobbey, despite his current form, offers a risk that could pay off given his demonstrated ability in prior seasons.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

As a Tottenham fan, this news on Spurs’ interest in Brian Brobbey is somewhat concerning. The need for a striker is apparent, especially given Solanke’s injury and his troubles in front of goal this season. However, Brobbey’s dramatic drop in form this year raises serious concerns. With only one goal in 17 Eredivisie appearances, it’s difficult to see how he can turn things around in the high-pressure environment of the Premier League.

Tottenham needs a player who can strike the ground running and provide immediate results to salvage the rest of the season. Brobbey’s potential is obvious, but his current performance does not instill confidence. It begs the question: are Spurs overly desperate in their pursuit for a striker? One can only hope that if Brobbey does arrive, he will regain his prior season’s form rather than continuing this year’s worrying trend.
