Tottenham Hotspur is apparently seeking for a new midfielder during the January transfer window.
Spurs have done well in the market so far, signing Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin early in the window. Tottenham are apparently targeting a quality 24-year-old midfielder who presently plays in Serie A.
According to Sky Sports News, Tottenham are interested in Atalanta ace Ederson, who is also rumored to be on Newcastle United’s radar. The Athletic claimed ahead of the January transfer window that Tottenham were more interested in a new midfielder than a new forward.
‘Spurs will most likely try to sign a No 8, but they prefer someone who can also play defensive midfield or in an advanced role,’ they said.
Tottenham are a little short on midfield choices, especially now that Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are at the Africa Cup of Nations, so a new No. 8 might be a decent choice.
Furthermore, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s future at Spurs is uncertain, however, according to the Sky Sports News source, the Lilywhites are not in a hurry to make midfield changes. Tutto Atalanta has revealed that the Bergamo club wants €35 million (about £30 million) for its talent.
Tottenham Hotspur targets Ederson – factfile
So, who is Ederson, and what will he add to the Tottenham midfield? Ederson of Atalanta, not to be confused with his namesake at Manchester City, has quickly risen to prominence since his arrival in Europe.
In January 2022, the 24-year-old joined Italian team Salernitana from Brazilian club Corinthians, and within six months, he had moved to Bergamo for roughly £18 million. He has made 64 competitive appearances for Atalanta, scoring seven times and assisting twice.
Just today, South American football expert Tim Vickery informed Sky Sports News what kind of player Ederson is, amid connections to Newcastle.
“He’s a strong, well-built central midfielder,” remarked the Spaniard. “He is strong on the ball, versatile from box to box, and has a strong attitude.
“The first thing I recall about him was his professional debut for Cruzeiro, who were on the decline at the moment.
“They were demoted in appalling circumstances, but he stood out.
“So many attributes, and I’m wondering if they remind you of another Brazilian who is already wearing Newcastle’s shirt.
“You could see this either as back-up in the squad to Bruno Guimaraes, or, with Newcastle being under pressure with financial fair play, and potential big-money offers coming in for Bruno Guimaraes, you could see him as a possible replacement.”
