Tom English has responded to a Celtic supporter who questioned why Adam Idah was not commended for his performance against Aston Villa while Rangers star Cyriel Dessers was for his performance against Union Saint-Gilloise.
While the Nigeria international did not score, his hold-up play and fine eye for a ball both contributed to the Gers’ three-point victory at Ibrox.
English took to X to laud Dessers, writing: “Big Dessers was pretty excellent tonight. Incredible resilience. The abuse the guy has endured is unbelievable. Tough boy with growing confidence. Fair play to him.
One response questioned why Idah, who scored twice against Villa the night before, did not receive the same treatment.
English, a BBC Scotland correspondent, responded to the fan on his personal X account on January 30th, calling him “needy”.
“Are you really that needy, Billy?” “Really,” he wrote.
Cyriel Dessers deserves to win his position with Rangers.
Despite being the Gers’ leading scorer last season, Dessers was linked with a move away from Ibrox for much of the summer.
The winter transfer season has been no different, with the striker linked with a return to Serie A despite Rangers only having three senior strikers on their roster.
And, given Danilo’s injury history, it appears that Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen would be shooting themselves in the foot by allowing the number nine to go.
While his finishing may disappoint fans and make him appear to be a much poorer player than he is, it appears like he should be given at least the second half of the 2024/25 season to establish himself.
His recent performances have been quite impressive, and while Hamza Igamane is expected to be the main striker for the remainder of the season, Dessers will undoubtedly get the occasional chance to make his presence known.
