Nottingham Forest went to Liverpool over the weekend and shocked some Premier League fans by winning 1-0 to grab a significant scalp.
The Reds won on Merseyside for the first time since 1969, and Nuno Espirito Santo accomplished something that even Brian Clough couldn’t.
Forest won the game with a 72nd-minute goal from Callum Hudson-Odoi, his first of the 2024/25 season after eight goals for the Reds previous season.
With Liverpool having failed to concede a goal under Arne Slot before Saturday, it’s difficult to see many people predicting Forest to remain unbeaten after the trip to Anfield.
Forest have won two and drawn two of their four matches this season, and they are presently sixth in the Premier League table.
There were several standout performances over the weekend, and the club appears to have done some fantastic business in the transfer market this summer.
Adam Summerton praises Nottingham Forest player.
Amidst some facile assumptions about Forest and their expenditures this summer, it’s encouraging to see that some analysts can still provide substance to their comments.
Adam Summerton, a TNT Sports analyst, was taken aback by Forest’s ability to sign Nikola Milenkovic over the summer.
He isn’t surprised he chose Forest, but he is amazed the club was able to persuade Fiorentina to sell its top defender for only £12 million.
After Saturday’s game, he took to X and said: “In quiet moments, the Forest recruitment team must reflect on the moment they had a £12 million bid accepted for a CL class CB in his prime years.
“Milenkovic making a mockery of that fee – I honestly don’t know what Fiorentina were thinking, and said so at the time.”
Milenkovic is a prospective Forest captain.
Wearing the armband is not unusual for the Serbian defender. He captained Fiorentina to back-to-back Conference League finals, and he now captains his country.
Milenkovic has expertise on major events, which makes him an ideal addition to the Forest squad, since many individuals lack the same level of experience.
At 26, he’s in his prime years, and Summerton nails it. A charge of £12 million is crazy business, and it’s about time Forest got some respect.
When the club originally started, landing 23 players in a single summer earned them a lot of criticism. However, circumstances have changed, and the facile assumptions regarding the club’s recruitment should be dropped.
Forest have struck gold with Milenkovic, and it would be unsurprising if he gets the captain’s armband at some point this season.
