“They’ve peaked”: Don Goodman compares Leeds United and Manchester City live on Sky Sports

Leeds United are aiming to return to the Premier League this season and could win the Championship title along the way, as they currently sit top of the table.

After Daniel Farke and Leeds’ back-to-back losses away to Preston and West Brom in 2023, few expected 2024 to turn out the way it is right now.

Since then, the Whites haven’t tasted loss in the league, drawing just one game and allowing no goals from open play.

Championship table as it stands: Leeds top the league.

Leeds entered this week’s international break on top of the standings after defeating Millwall at home on Sunday.

Their lead over Leicester City is only by one goal, given the Foxes still have a game in hand, but it contrasts sharply with the 17-point disparity between the two clubs when the new year began.

Ipswich Town’s thrashing of Sheffield Wednesday has not only kept them in touch with the top two, but also dramatically increased their goal difference.

Position Club MP W D L GD PTS
    1 Leeds United 38 25 7 6 42 82
    2 Leicester City 37 26 4 7 41 82
    3 Ipswich Town 38 24 9 5 31 81
    4 Southampton 36 22 7 7 26 73
    5 West Brom 38 19 9 10 23 66
    6 Norwich City 38 18 7 13 15 61

Sky Sports’ Don Goodman discusses Leeds United’s promotion verdict.

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has now remarked on air about Leeds’ incredible run of form in 2024, which has propelled them to the top spot for the time being.

When asked about how strong their current momentum is, he says it is exactly the reverse of what the teams surrounding them expected this year.

    “Yes, it is massive.

“Won twelve, drawn one, and lost none of the last thirteen. That is an extraordinary winning streak at any level of football, and it is a huge momentum, confidence, and self-belief building.

“Everything that Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton would not have wanted to happen.

“Look, Leeds are in the ascendancy; everything is going their way; five of the previous eight games have been against teams in the top half, so there are some difficult games on paper, but momentum is on their side.

“They’ve peaked at the ideal time; we constantly discuss Manchester City in the Premier League, don’t we? Leeds United have done well in the Championship this season by creating momentum and going on winning streaks whenever the new year arrives.

Daniel Farke’s team is currently receiving high accolades and being compared fairly.

When Manchester City turns the screw in the Premier League title battle, no one can catch up, which is what Goodman is referring to here.

While the quality and styles of play may not compare to Leeds or Pep Guardiola’s side, he makes an excellent point about Farke’s approach.

Farke has entered the new year in the Championship promotion race three times and found another gear, both defensively and offensively.

We’re in such a terrific situation right now, and all we have to do is hold our nerve till the conclusion.
