Paul Merson has said that the next month will be a ‘defining’ one for Liverpool in their pursuit of the Premier League title this season, given the Reds’ upcoming games.
Arne Slot’s side begins February with a visit to in-form Bournemouth, followed by trips to Everton and Manchester City over the next three weeks.
It’s a daunting triple header of away matches in the top flight, and another could be added in the meantime: if we make it to the Carabao Cup final, our match against Aston Villa will be moved to the 19th of this month to avoid a fixture clash with the Wembley showpiece.
Merson offers a title prediction for Liverpool.
Merson has offered Sportskeeda his predictions for the weekend’s Premier League action, and he believes Liverpool will be tough to catch if they win seven points on the road this month.
He wrote, “February will be a defining month in the Premier League for Liverpool.” In addition to their forthcoming trip to Bournemouth, they will face Everton and Manchester City away from home this month. If Liverpool collects seven points from these three games, they will win the Premier League!
“Then again, you look at these fixtures and think, ‘Bournemouth are in great form, Everton are a different beast under Moyes, and Manchester City can beat anyone on their day.'” Even though Liverpool has been outstanding in the Premier League this season, these games will be difficult to manage.
Merson predicts a 1-1 tie in today’s encounter at the Vitality Stadium.
February may make or break Liverpool’s title ambitions.
February has the potential to make or destroy Liverpool’s Premier League title aspirations, given the upcoming matchups.
Even if the Villa match goes forward as planned on March 15, the Reds’ remaining road games are all challenging. We’ve won only two of our last 12 journeys to Goodison Park and haven’t won at the Etihad Stadium in domestic competition in nearly a decade.
Before we get into those games, winning three points at Bournemouth today would be huge, with Andoni Iraola’s side coming off a 5-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest last week, shredding a team that has defeated and drew us all season.
Even once both games are over, Liverpool will face Newcastle on February 26th in the Premier League.
If Liverpool can go through the next five or six top-flight games in no worse shape than they are now (six points ahead with a game in hand), their chances of finishing the season as champions look much better.
