The former captain is on the hot seat until the end of the season, with Gerrard’s name touted as Philippe Clement’s permanent replacement.
Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has been listed as the favourite to succeed Philippe Clement in the Ibrox dugout.
And, while Barry Ferguson has taken over as interim manager, the door remains open for the Liverpool legend to make a sensational comeback at the end of the season. Clement, the Belgian manager, was fired on Sunday in the midst of a terrible season with Rangers on the verge of missing out on silverware. The disappointing defeat to St Mirren at Ibrox proved to be the last straw.
Gerrard is out of work following his unsuccessful stint with Al-Ettifaq. After leaving Ibrox for a crack at the English Premier League, he was released by Aston Villa before making a surprise move to the Saudi Pro League. However, that spell came to an end earlier this season, with Ettifaq battling around the bottom of the league.
Despite a dismal stint since leaving Glasgow, Ally McCoist was ready to suggest the Premiership title-winning manager as a permanent replacement for the fired Clement on Monday morning. He informed talkSPORT that Stevie Gerrard will be in the conversation.
“Kevin Muscat has won three separate leagues across three nations. There are one or two choices, but none of them stand out.”
According to rumors, Gerrard is unlikely to take a job until at least April. If he took a job before then, he could face tax troubles in Saudi Arabia, according to talkSPORT.
Ferguson will be in charge at Ibrox until at least the summer, with Allan McGregor, Billy Dodds, and Neil McCann joining him as coaches. The historic captain might persuade the club to extend his contract, but a move for Gerrard would only be confirmed at the end of the season.
