Rangers are in talks over a potential majority takeover and continue to search for a new manager.
Dan Plumley, a football finance expert, has examined the financial differences between Rangers and Celtic. However, he believes that the prospective fresh cash influx will allow Rangers to sign impactful players like Černý.
Dan Plumley examines Rangers’ finances.
Plumley told Ibrox News that Scottish football economics are ‘the most significant issue’ in the game right now. That is partly due to Celtic’s significant financial gains from the Champions League, which has a telling impact on Rangers.
“It shows how difficult the finances are in Scottish football more broadly and we have talked about this a lot, and we will keep talking about it because it’s the most pertinent issue,” added the Premiership player.
“There’s a big difference between whether you qualify for the Champions League and how far you go in the Europa League. And then there’s the situation with Scottish clubs in the Premier League, so it’s very evident right now that Celtic will profit more this year as a result of their Champions League run.
“That’s going to have a pretty big impact on what Rangers do, so I always believe with this one it’s more about the short-term situation of Rangers in any particular season, but also because of the way that league works, where Celtic are as well.
“We don’t always want to keep comparing, but financially you almost have to because it then filters down to decisions like this, and I think what you’re seeing here is more of a product of the short-term position because historically Rangers will be looking to be able to afford those kind of fees.”
Plumley also discussed Rangers’ season thus far and endorsed a new round of investment to transform the dynamic at Ibrox. The Gers parted ways with Philippe Clement following another dismal Scottish Premiership outcome. Rangers is now 13 points behind league leaders Celtic.
“I think it’s really kind of wrapped up in the short-term position at the minute, and ultimately that comes down to where they are on the pitch, which is just not where they wanted to be this season,” Plumley continued.
