Leeds United made a few late approaches for center backs in January.
The Whites only made one acquisition during the window, with Burnley’s Connor Roberts joining on loan for the rest of the season to cover their right-back vacancy.
Anyone who arrived at Elland Road last month knew it would be difficult to break into Daniel Farke’s starting XI, and Roberts has found that to be true, yet it does not mean he hasn’t made an impression.
It also did not prevent Leeds from making approaches for a few centre-backs, including Harry Souttar, Ben Godfrey, and Joe Worrall, all of whom Nick Hammond and his team tried but failed to sign.
Another possibility Leeds are claimed to have considered is Newcastle United’s Paul Dummett, and although no deal was reached, journalist Joel Bland now reports that he will leave St. James’ Park for free in the summer.
Dummett to quit Newcastle for free
On deadline day, transfer insider Dean Jones revealed that Dummett was a late-season alternative for Leeds that might be considered if they found value in it.
However, it appears that the deal never got off the ground, as the 32-year-old opted to stay at Newcastle, where he has played only four minutes of Premier League football this season.
It is believed that the Magpies have decided not to offer him a new contract at the conclusion of the season after he took a pay cut last summer to extend his stay at the club by one year.
Even though he is poised to become available on a free transfer, it appears unlikely that Leeds will attempt to re-sign him, regardless of whether they are promoted to the Premier League.
Dummett has rarely kicked a ball in each of Newcastle’s last three seasons, and that is not the direction Leeds’ new owners have attempted to take in terms of recruitment thus far.
