Sam Byram’s participation in Leeds United’s pre-season games in the summer surprised many, and his one-year contract even more so. The contract is now coming to an end.

The 30-year-old shone for Leeds in the opening half of the season. Daniel Farke, who plays on the left side of a back four, said to be the finest left-back in the Championship right now.

However, Junior Firpo returned to the bench after the 1-0 victory over Leicester and has since reclaimed his position in the XI ahead of Byram, starting ten league games in a row. Byram has been observing from the bench.

Sam Byram could have his last opportunity at the Leeds deal on Tuesday.

With only 11 games remaining, and maybe 14 if we finish in the play-offs, Byram’s options are getting restricted. However, Byram may have just been given a chance, with Firpo likely unavailable.

Indeed, Farke acknowledged in Monday’s news conference that Firpo could be out owing to a calf injury sustained in the previous match, a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield. Byram is the obvious choice to come in.

A late decision on Firpo will be made, but Farke emphasized that he would not take any long-term risks. So, with Byram likely to come in, Tuesday could be his last chance to prove he deserves a new contract.
