Chris Sutton concedes that Josh Sargent’s injury is a “worry” for Norwich City, but he still believes they will beat Leeds United at Elland Road.
The former Canaries striker spoke live on BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 on 12 May, following the goalless draw in the first leg at Carrow Road earlier that day, challenging Robbie Savage’s claim that the result puts Daniel Farke’s side in control.
The Whites kept their first clean sheet in five games after a horrific end to the Championship season, as American attacker Sargent was withdrawn early, to bring Norwich back to West Yorkshire level with their own home advantage, but Sutton is not convinced.
“Christopher, you’ve got to fancy Leeds, haven’t you?” Savage replied (3m).
Sutton responded, “Erm, do you know what?” I don’t think that’s the worst outcome [for Norwich]. Elland Road is a wonderful stadium, but what is at stake?
“Josh Sargent went off injured towards the end, that’s a worry, but imagine if Leeds fans get a little bit nervy, I’ve got a feeling for the Canaries Rob.”
Josh Sargent hurt in the first leg against Leeds United
If Sargent is out for the replay, David Wagner would lose his 16-goal top scorer, a clear setback to their ambitions of reaching the Wembley final on May 26.
The Elland Road crowd has the power to scare any visiting side, as Liam Cooper has already stated, but it can also put Leeds United on edge if tensions rise and events do not go as planned.
Farke’s defence may have returned to form, with Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu limiting goals surrendered to just three in 13 league games at Carrow Road since the start of 2024, but he also has reservations about his own attack.
Patrick Bamford’s injury comes as star player Georginio Rutter’s form has slipped, and Joel Piroe has been out of the picture for some time.
Crysencio Summerville is no longer at his unstoppable best after being crowned Championship Player of the Season, while Dan James’ previously superb play has been interrupted by injury.
So, while Leeds United should be favourites this week, few fans are going to be overconfident in the outcome, especially considering the club’s history in the play-offs.
