According to the Sunday People, Leeds United and Leicester City are vying to capture Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United during the summer transfer season.

On Sunday (21 April, page 53), the newspaper said that if the Whites win promotion, they will compete with their Championship opponents to sign a new midfielder.

Daniel Farke has considered Longstaff as an option once his contract at St James’ Park expires.

Clive Herrington has stated that the interested parties must be elevated in order to sign him.

He stated, “Leicester have emerged as potential rivals to Leeds for Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff.”

“Longstaff only has a year left on his contract, and Eddie Howe regards the Tynesider highly. Newcastle could be lured by a £15-20 million bid. The possibilities of Leicester or Leeds securing the 26-year-old are dependent on them improving.”

Should Leeds United sign Sean Longstaff?

When coming up from defence, Leeds’ midfield has frequently included Glen Kamara, Ilia Gruev, and Ethan Ampadu.

They all have their strengths, but they like to sit deeper and influence play in a double pivot, which has been Farke’s foundation.

If the Whites are promoted to the Premier League this season, they may require additional midfield alternatives.

Longstaff is more of a box-to-box player, preferring to go into the box whenever possible. According to FotMob, he’s scored four goals and assisted twice.

Due to his injuries this season, he has only started 24 games due to the Magpies’ tight schedule.

His defensive abilities are not very spectacular when compared to the choices available to Leeds.

Having said that, if he were to play in a three-man midfield in the Premier League, he may be a very good option for a reduced sum.
