All the most recent headlines as Leeds United focus on Saturday’s match against Rotherham United at Elland Road.
Leeds United advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup on Tuesday evening, but attention has already shifted back to their Championship promotion campaign. This season, the Whites face Rotherham United at Elland Road, where they will be hoping to extend their unbeaten streak to nine games. Ahead of that contest, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most recent Leeds-related news.
Llorente’s latest
AS Roma are reportedly planning a summer move for Leeds United’s Diego Llorente, although the club is already considering moving him. That’s because Roma apparently has a €5 million option to buy Llorente, who is halfway through his second loan in the Italian city, giving them the potential to sell him for a profit in the summer.
The proposal was first revealed by La Republicca, which claims Llorente might have a number of clubs interested in signing him at the conclusion of the season, including Paris Saint-Germain, who were connected with the defender in January. As a result, according to TuttoMercatoWeb, Roma wants to finalize the agreement with Leeds as quickly as possible before making him accessible to other clubs.
Roma is up against it in terms of financial fair play, and the possibility to make a considerable profit on Llorente would be a huge boost for the club. Llorente has been an important player for Roma this season, making 27 games in all competitions and rebuilding his image following a rough period at Elland Road.
Leeds receives stadium warning.
Leeds United have been informed of the potential difficulties they may face if they decide to sell the name rights to their Elland Road stadium. It’s unknown whether the 49ers Enterprises would be willing to make such a move in order to generate more cash and potentially increase the club’s ability to spend elsewhere.
Many clubs have taken this approach, although it is not always popular, according to football financial expert Kieran Maguire.
“While a naming rights deal for Elland Road has got to be conceivable, the challenge will be that Leeds fans will always call it Elland Road,” Maguire told Football Insider, following the sale of the San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium naming rights for $170 million last month.
“We’ve seen this at other clubs, such as Bolton, where their stadium is still referred to as the Reebok Stadium despite having been changed several times. The same thing happened at Coventry and other clubs; getting a sponsor’s name into the public consciousness is extremely tough.
“This also has a significant impact on the pricing that can be achieved as a result. So there’s no reason to call it something different unless Leeds follow in the footsteps of Mike Ashley, who tried to enforce the Sports Direct sponsorship at Newcastle and failed miserably.
