Steven Gerrard has been tipped to return to Ibrox for a second stint in charge if Rangers look for a new permanent manager.
Following Philippe Clement’s sacking last week, Barry Ferguson took over as Rangers manager till the end of the season.
The Gers great began his career with a 4-2 comeback victory over Hibernian at Rugby Park and will likely be secretly hopeful of continuing beyond this season.
However, it appears like Rangers’ management will attempt to bring in a new player in time for the 2025-26 season, with several names being mentioned.
Derek Ferguson backs Gerrard’s return to Rangers
Gerrard, who led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2020-21, is the bookmakers’ favourite to become the next permanent manager at Ibrox.
The 44-year-old recently departed his role at Al-Ettifaq and has a 55.1 percent victory rate in his managing career, which included a spell at Aston Villa.
Derek Ferguson, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News prior to his brother Barry obtaining the Gers post, stated: “It’s surprising Steven abandoned his position in Saudi. It’s something Rangers fans will probably like.
“He led the club to 55 trophies, though others believe it took him three years to get there. He eventually made it, and he is well regarded; most admirers adore him.
“To be honest, I would embrace such appointment. I would not be opposed to Steven Gerrard coming in.
Who are the candidates for the next Rangers manager?
Beyond Gerrard, Issame Charai, a former member of Clement’s coaching staff, and Barry Ferguson are high on the list.
Indeed, it may well be that the job is Barry Ferguson’s to lose if he can do more than just steady the ship at Ibrox.
There are more fanciful names on the list, such as Sean Dyche and Russell Martin, who both recently left jobs in the Premier League.
Frank Lampard appears to be another outsider, despite only recently taking charge of Coventry City, but the Gers now have some time to play with before making a decision.
