Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer market has been open for three weeks, and despite their severe need for reinforcements, the club has only made one signing.
The £12.5 million acquisition of young goalkeeper Antonín Kinský was necessary and appears to be a wonderful deal. However, considering the team’s current season, it is not enough.
Ange Postecoglou’s team has been decimated by injuries in defence, and now that Dominic Solanke is out, their options up front look less than ideal.
So it’s not unexpected that the club has been associated with a slew of players in recent weeks, including Southampton’s intriguing Tyler Dibling, despite the fact that he’s worth millions less than one of Postecoglou’s most important players.
Tottenham’s Transfer Targets
So, one of the names that keeps cropping up in connection with Tottenham this month is Lecce star Patrick Dorgu, who has already scored three goals and assisted once in 20 Serie A outings.
However, while Spurs’ interest is real, fresh reports from transfers analyst Fabrizio Romao indicate that Manchester United has already surpassed them in the chase.
The Lilywhites are reportedly interested in Palmeiras’ midfielder Richard Ríos on many occasions this month.
According to acclaimed expert Ben Mattinson, the Colombian international is a “press-resistant” monster with a “engine which allows him to get up and down the pitch all game,” and might thus be the ideal long-term successor for the increasingly underperforming Yves Bissouma.
However, he apparently has a €100 million (£84 million) release clause in his contract, which might prove an impassable obstacle.
While defensive and midfield reinforcements are necessary for Postecoglou’s team to progress, frontline arrivals will thrill fans, and Southampton gem Dibling has been prominently connected with the club this week.
The 20-year-old is reportedly available for roughly £55 million this month, and while that may seem like a lot for someone so young, his performances this season indicate he’d be well worth it.
For example, in just 24 appearances, the up-and-coming “game-breaker,” as Mattinson refers to him, has four goals and two assists, for an average of one goal per four games.
While it is obviously excellent for such a young player on such a bad team, his value is still overshadowed by that of one of Spurs’ premier attackers, who occasionally plays in the same role.
The Spurs star is valued millions more than Dibling.
To get right to the point, the player in question is none other than the sensationally talented Dejan Kulusevski.
The Swedish superstar has been one of Spurs’ few bright spots this season and, according to Football Transfers, is worth up to €73.8 million, which equates to a cool £63.3 million, or almost £8.3 million more than Dibling could cost the club.
That is, without a doubt, a high valuation, but it would be fair to argue that it has been more than justified in recent years, and particularly this season.
For example, in just 33 games for Postecoglou this year, despite switching between midfield and right wing, the “world-class” 24-year-old, as termed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored nine goals and assisted eight times.

Dibling, a former Juventus star, is averaging a goal every 1.94 games, which is impressive for a struggling team like Tottenham Hotspur.
Ultimately, Spurs should try to sign Dibling this year as he has the potential to reach the top, and Kulusevski would be an excellent mentor.
