Southampton manager Russell Martin has spoken about his side’s victory over West Brom on Friday night.
Southampton manager Russell Martin has warned Leeds United and others that his team is ‘up for the fight’ in a tight contest for second place. With a superb victory over playoff contenders West Brom on Friday night, the Saints climbed into second position for the time being.
Southampton suffered a rare setback this week, but have recovered courtesy to goals from Ryan Fraser and David Brooks. They are now one point ahead of Leeds in the table after playing the same number of games, though the Whites might go ahead if they play one more game on Saturday against Plymouth Argyle.
In the meantime, Southampton manager Martin has spoken about his team’s performance at The Hawthorns, reminding promotion opponents that the Saints are ready to fight. “This is our finest win of the season. After the questions were asked on Tuesday, those watching – the teams in hotels and individuals at home – were eager to see how the team answered, and they did not disappoint,” Martin added. “It’s a significant occasion for us.
“There was a significant increase in hostility compared to Tuesday. When I saw it again on Tuesday, I felt worse than I had after the game. I didn’t make a big issue about being aggressive, and it was a hangover from Saturday.
“Away from home, we’ve done well overall. We lost 3-1 and didn’t play well, but the fans cheered us on until the end. Hopefully, tonight will show that the lads are truly ready to battle.”
