Slot has to fire the fifth-best Liverpool player after Spurs since he has fewer touches than Alisson

Liverpool’s 24-match winning streak in all competitions came to an end last night when they lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the opening leg of the Carabao Cup.

Ange Postecoglou’s team won the match thanks to a contentious goal by Lucas Bergvall in the last ten minutes of play, although the Swede should have been sent off for a second yellow card only minutes earlier.

As the Reds aim to advance to their first final under the Dutchman’s leadership after his appointment in the summer, Arne Slot will want to make amends in the second leg at Anfield next month.

Many of the players were given recalls to the team, giving them a chance to challenge for a regular first-team spot, but they were unable to do so in the match in North London, and the Merseysiders failed to score for the first time since the 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest back in September.

Curtis Jones was given another chance to shine in an attacking midfield role following his lackluster performance against Manchester United over the weekend.

The academy graduate did not complete a single crucial pass when playing with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch. He completed 96% of his passes, many of which were sideways and backwards.

Additionally, he failed to capitalize on Slot’s increased faith in him, losing possession six times and committing two fouls in the process.

Following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s terrible performance against the Red Devils on Sunday night, Conor Bradley was chosen to start at right-back.

The Northern Ireland international, however, did not benefit from his selection; he lost possession 18 times, which was more than any other Reds player on the evening, and he lost more than half of the duels he engaged.

Even while the previously listed players didn’t have much of an influence, one other starter had a memorable night in North London, seriously jeopardizing his spot in the squad due to his subpar performance.

Compared to Alisson, the Liverpool player with fewer touches

Moving forward Last night, Diogo Jota started the game for Liverpool in the number nine position, beating out players like Darwin Núñez and Luis Diaz.

He hadn’t kicked off a meeting since the match against Chelsea on Merseyside back in October, when he was hurt in the first 30 minutes against Enzo Maresca’s team.

But because of his hiatus, the Portugal international appeared to be lagging behind. He was pulled after just an hour and replaced by Nunez, a club record player.

Given his lack of effect on the field—he only managed 30 touches under Slot, which was less than goalkeeper Alisson’s 59—and his completion of just 12 passes, his substitution was justified.

In addition to losing 11 possessions and appearing wasteful with the ball, the 28-year-old lost 57% of duels against the temporary backline, which surely contributed to his dismissal at the hour mark.

As a result, Ian Doyle, a journalist for the Liverpool Echo, gave him a pitiful 5/10 match rating, saying that he was “barely involved” in the match against the Lilywhites.

Prior to the return to Premier League action against Forest at the City Ground on Tuesday, Slot must be forced to bench the former Wolves player.

Slot has to exact revenge after losing to the East Midlands team at Anfield earlier this season, and given the Reds’ recent performance under Nuno Espírito Santo, they cannot afford to take any chances on players who aren’t performing at the level needed.
