Latest Nottingham Forest news: Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe warns the Premier League about legal concerns with the Reds, Manchester City, and Everton.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, has warned that excessive regulation may result in “ruin” for the Premier League.
Champions Manchester City is challenging the league over its associated party transaction (APT) rules, which are intended to ensure that commercial dealings involving a club’s ownership are done at fair market value. While Nottingham Forest and Everton were both docked points last season for violating the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability guidelines (PSR).
City will also face a hearing in the autumn after being charged with 115 violations of Premier League rules, which could result in sanctions. Ratcliffe told Bloomberg that the Premier League has to be “careful” not to end up in “an endless legal wrangle with lots of clubs”.
He stated, “The Premier League is probably the most successful sporting league in the world, and certainly the most successful football league.” And we have this adage in northern England: ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’.
“If you start interfering too much and imposing too much regulation, you will end up with the Manchester City issue, the Everton issue, the Nottingham Forest issue, and so on.
“If you aren’t cautious, the Premier League will end up spending more time in court than it does thinking about what is best for the league. We have the best league in the world; don’t spoil it for heaven’s sake.”
