Sensational Steven Gerrard’s Rangers homecoming ‘wouldn’t surprise’ says Ally McCoist as he receives serious warning over future move

The 44-year-old won the title at Ibrox and is now out of work after a failed stint in the Middle East

Rangers strike hero Ally McCoist says he wouldn’t be surprised if Steven Gerrard made a stunning return to Ibrox.

The England and Liverpool legend is considering his next managerial move following a disastrous stint in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq. Gerrard began his career as a top-level manager at Rangers, where he achieved legendary status by winning the club’s first title in a decade, earning him a move to the Premier League with Aston Villa. McCoist admits the 44-year-old’s future step must be carefully examined, comparing it to his former Three Lions teammate Frank Lampard, who is back in the dugout at Coventry City and has had a promising start.

McCoist, who had three years himself as Rangers manager, told talkSPORT BET: “It wouldn’t surprise me if Steven Gerrard came back to Ibrox. He’s obviously held in really high regard by the supporters because of the league title he won, and his next job is going to be vitally important for him. Things haven’t gone according to plan for him after he left Rangers.

“A little bit like Frank Lampard going to Coventry – his next appointment was really important to him as well, so we’ll see what Steven ends up choosing to do with his career.

“At this moment in time however, the majority of Rangers fans have accepted that Philippe Clement has been given the backing of the board.

“Having said that, some of the performances away from home have been absolutely awful. They’ve performed poorly in certain games.”

“To be fair to him, there has been a consistent improvement in performances and results – they performed exceptionally well to finish in the top eight of the Europa League standings, especially given the strength of some of the teams they faced.
