Richard Hughes and Liverpool intend to reject some high-value offers for a first-team player this summer.
Fabrizio Romano has stated that Saudi Pro League clubs approached Alisson Becker in March. Nothing is yet advanced, but the contact has been established.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have no intention of accepting offers and will begin the season with Alisson. The ‘priority’ for both parties is for the Brazilian to stay at Anfield.
“Understand Liverpool are planning with Alisson as part of their squad for next season despite Saudi links,” Romano posted to X. “In March, there were approaches from Saudi clubs, but nothing tangible has happened so far.
“Alisson and Liverpool’s priority is to continue together.”
It appears that there is still some way to go, but Liverpool will have to make a huge decision here.
Liverpool are preparing for the decision on Alison Becker.
Romano is far from the first to report Saudi Arabia’s interest in Alisson. The Guardian reported near the close of the season that the league wanted a top-tier goalkeeper and had identified Liverpool’s No.1 as their primary target.
But it only works if Liverpool wants to sell, which they almost certainly don’t.
There is, however, an additional angle here. Caoimhin Kelleher wants to be a number one at a club, but he won’t get it at Anfield unless Alisson leaves.
Now, the Irishman is not at Alisson’s level yet, and no one would argue otherwise. But, after a year or two? It’s feasible that he will be the better long-term option.
Given Liverpool’s potential for a large transfer fee for Alisson this summer, it may be tempting to listen to bids. However, it looks they will not bother.
And, honestly, that’s probably the best option. Kelleher is a fantastic prospect, but Alisson is the world’s finest goalie and should continue to play at the highest level for at least three or four years.
Kelleher may play at the highest level for ten years, but ensuring the remainder of Alisson’s peak is an opportunity Liverpool should not pass up.
