Sandro Tonali, a Newcastle United midfielder, is coming up on two years with the club.
A member of Sandro Tonali’s entourage has stated unequivocally that he will eventually leave Newcastle United and return to Italy. The 24-year-old has become a key part of Eddie Howe’s midfield since his debut season on Tyneside was interrupted by a 10-month betting ban. But Marianna Mecacci, a senior figure at his agency GR Sports, has made it clear that the Magpies boss should enjoy him while he can.
Tonali was rumoured to have been forced out of AC Milan after Newcastle made a £55 million deal in the summer of 2023. The midfielder then stated in his first interview as a Newcastle player that leaving the San Siro was’very difficult’.
Tonali was a young sensation at Brescia who was generally expected to become a long-lasting Serie A figure when he went for Milan at the age of 20. Although his time with the Rossoneri was cut short, Mecacci has hinted that this may not be the end of the narrative.
And, while she did not confirm Tonali’s return to Italy, her statements suggest that his Premier League stint will be short-lived.
“He will return to Italy,” Mecacci said Sportitalia. “When? It’s difficult to say. He has Italian football background; it’s wonderful to see a man grow through adversity. I started following him in Brescia.
“The operation that transported him to England was amazing. I realize that caused dissatisfaction. Tonali, Milan’s son, is sold for a record sum, demonstrating his unwavering faith. It was also an option to try a new experience. As long as the possibility of the Premier League exists, he will take use of it, but it is unrealistic to assume that he will not return to Italian football.”
Tonali has participated in 25 of Newcastle’s 27 Premier League games this season, starting 17 of them and contributed to two goals.
It’s uncertain whether the Magpies will try to cash in on Tonali this summer, when he still has three years on his contract. The Italian international has formed a strong midfield partnership with Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes this season, but Newcastle’s financial restraints may force them to sell if they want to spend big.
Despite the super-rich Saudi PIF’s influence at St. James’ Park, transfer spending has been restricted in previous windows.
