Leeds United signed Joe Rothwell on Thursday night, making him the club’s third summer acquisition.
Rothwell has joined on a season-long loan from Bournemouth, following Joe Rodon and Alex Cairns to Elland Road.
Prior to Rothwell’s arrival, it appeared to be a quiet week on the transfer front at Leeds, however his presence was speculated and confirmed within hours.
His appointment should reassure Leeds supporters that things are happening behind the scenes, even when there is utter radio quiet.
During 49ers Enterprises’ first summer in command, it became evident that they prefer to keep things under wraps, and it appears that this will continue.
McCormack reacts to Rothwell joining Leeds.
Daniel Farke stated on multiple times last season that his squad lacked experience, therefore it is not surprising to see someone like Rothwell come through the door.
Rothwell has made just under 200 appearances in the top two tiers of English football and spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Southampton, so he understands what it takes to be promoted.
None of Leeds’ midfielders scored during the 46-game regular season, and Rothwell should assist to alleviate that issue.
He scored four goals in 20 Saints appearances, one of which was good enough to earn the club’s goal of the season title.
Rothwell has 14 goals and 18 assists in 168 Championship games, which is far better than Leeds’ current midfield alternatives.
Former Leeds striker Ross McCormack was among many who reacted when the club announced his signing on various social media channels. It’s fair to say he’s pleased with the business.
What Rothwell has said since joining Leeds.
Rothwell was really on the bench for Southampton’s play-off final versus Leeds at Wembley Stadium in May.
He understands what it takes to be promoted out of this level, and his experience should benefit a young club.
And assisting Leeds return to the Premier League is exactly what he plans to achieve while his loan at Elland Road.
He commented on Instagram, “Absolutely over the moon to get this over the line; Leeds United as a club speaks for itself and required no convincing to come here.” I can’t wait to get started and hopefully get this club back where it belongs.”
