Nottingham Forest sold several players this summer to help satisfy the latest round of PSR, with Odysseas Vlachodimos joining Newcastle.
Last season, the stopper failed to impress either Steve Cooper or Nuno Espirito Santo, finishing as the third-choice custodian.
Vlachodimos was part of some financial gymnastics for Forest, as the club agreed to a deal with Newcastle for Elliot Anderson.
Forest signed Anderson for £35 million, but Newcastle signed Vlachodimos for £20 million to offset some of that value.
Anderson came off the bench for Forest on Saturday, but Vlachodimos felt a very familiar feeling.
Newcastle made an unusual Odysseas Vlachodimos judgment.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle may already be planning to bid farewell to the Greek international.
Vlachodimos, who Newcastle paid £20 million for just over a month ago, is said to be on the verge of a loan move.
Vlachodimos did not come on as a substitute in Newcastle’s win against Southampton on Saturday, and he appears to be the third choice at St James’ Park.
That does not bode well for the 29-year-old, who will almost certainly be looking to play some football this season in order to establish himself in England.
Last season, Vlachodimos made only seven appearances for Forest, maintaining one clean sheet and conceding 16 goals.
His prospects of starting at Newcastle ahead of Nick Pope were dismal, but it was expected that he’d be a regular option off the bench.
Forest have done very well in getting £20 million for Vlachodimos.
The Reds face a lot of criticism from a certain segment of the fan base for how they handle transfer transactions.
This summer, however, a clear strategy shift has occurred, with Forest targeting players with lower fees and greater potential.
Seven new players have been added, however the total amount spent pales in comparison to the amounts paid for Vlachodimos, Moussa Niakhate, and Orel Mangala.
Forest still have some work to do this summer, and a new striker is at the top of the list.
Getting rid of players like Vlachodimos while still recouping significant money has to be considered a great success, regardless of what other new business occurs this month.
