According to TyC Sports, Argentina Under-23 manager Javier Mascherano will meet with Tottenham authorities to encourage the club to release Cristian Romero for the Olympics.
Romero admitted last month that he would want to be selected for Argentina’s World Cup squad this summer (The Standard).
While an Under-23 squad will compete in the Olympics, teams can nominate three players over the age of 23, and Romero has been identified as one of those three.
Cristian Romero has big summer plans.
The centre-back will be part of Argentina’s squad for the Copa America, which will take place from June 10th to July 14th.
If he is picked for the Olympics, which begin on July 26th, he may travel directly to France, missing pre-season as well as the start of Tottenham’s 2024-25 season.
According to TyC Sports, Mascherano intends to take one senior centre-back to the Olympics, with the former Barcelona player set to select Romero or Nicolas Otamendi.
It is alleged that the 39-year-old will travel to Europe to discuss the availability of Spurs and Benfica’s players.
According to the source, Mascherano will try to leverage the players’ desire to appeal to the clubs, and he will also consult with Romero and Otamendi to see ‘whether they can negotiate’ with their respective clubs.
