Illan Meslier is currently making headlines at Leeds United, but for the wrong reasons. The Frenchman appears to be facing an unclear future following his previous Hull City horror show.
Illan Meslier is frequently discussed among Leeds United fans. However, his bad performances and individual errors have recently resulted in his team losing points.
Meslier’s last game was a disaster against Hull City. He was perhaps to blame for the first goal, but there was no dispute about the second. Meslier infuriated his Leeds teammates when he palmed the ball into the path of striker Joao Pedro, triggering Hull’s comeback that day.
Daniel Farke says he will not drop Meslier anytime soon, but there is increasing pressure on him to do so. With the January transfer window being open, Leeds has the option of replacing Meslier or keeping him for the remainder of the season.
Leeds United wants River Plate goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma.
Several goalkeepers have recently been linked with moves to Elland Road, most notably Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher. But the Whites have found another potential Meslier replacement in River Plate goalkeeper Jeremias Ledesma.
According to Argentinian publication River Noticias, Leeds has the 31-year-old shot-stopper ‘on their radar’ and believes he ‘may go’ before the January transfer window closes on February 3rd.
Ledesma, also known as Conan Ledesma, progressed through the ranks at Rosario Central in his home Argentina. After a few seasons as their number one, he moved to Spain with Cadiz in 2021, where he played another three years, earning 138 total games, including 106 in La Liga as a permanent Cadiz player.
He is now fighting for playing time at River Plate, where he has made only four appearances since signing in 2024.
Daniel Farke’s Illan Meslier U-turn at Leeds United
Despite Farke claiming that he won’t drop Meslier, it’s now been stated that Leeds are ready to replace Meslier during the January transfer window. However, it is unclear where they will look for a successor.
Ledesma has some experience in La Liga, albeit not much for a 31-year-old, and he is not exactly match fit. He has never played in England, although current number two Karl Darlow has.
Darlow could be furious if Farke contracts a new no.1 to replace Meslier rather than giving him a chance in the Championship.
Darlow will almost certainly start against Harrogate Town in the FA Cup on Saturday, and Farke will have an excellent chance to drop Meslier, if that is his plan.
