It will be a hectic few days for Leeds United, with reports indicating that the transfer team at Elland Road is currently working hard to bring in some new recruits before Monday’s deadline.
Daniel Farke stated earlier this month that he did not anticipate a busy January window. Last week, Farke stated that he wanted three new signings, and following the draw at Burnley, he hinted that a fresh signing was on the way.
Leeds lacks cover in the no.10 position, with only two fit strikers available. Pascal Struijk is a possibility to start at Cardiff after a hamstring injury, but there is a lack of cover in the middle of defence.
Leeds United have opened talks to sign a Newcastle United player.
According to The Athletic, Leeds are in talks to sign Newcastle United left-back Matty Targett. The £15m Newcastle signing has struggled for game time this season, with Lewis Hall first choice for the Toon.
Eddie Howe once described Targett as “outstanding” on Sky Sports, a player that has huge experience in both the Premier League and the Championship. He has entered the last 18 months of his Newcastle deal.
Left-back is not a position deemed entirely necessary at Elland Road right now. But, Junior Firpo is in the final six months of his contract as is Sam Byram, who has renowned for being largely injury prone.
Jesse Marsch wanted to sign Matty Targett while he was Leeds manager.
Back in the summer of 2022, football website 90Min revealed that Leeds wanted to sign Targett with Jesse Marsch as manager. Nothing materialised, and Targett has remained at Newcastle after signing on a permanent contract.
Targett, who has only made two appearances for Newcastle this season, will undoubtedly be looking for a move. Howe’s Newcastle team made one Premier League substitution and one FA Cup start.
It remains to be seen whether Leeds will follow up on their first investigation to sign Targett. It also shows that Leeds are preparing for life without Firpo, who has recovered from a hamstring injury.
