Report: Leeds United gets the green light to move for a ‘exceptional’ Newcastle United player

Newcastle United defender Matt Targett has been the subject of a late enquiry from Leeds United, and Newcastle’s position on the potential transfer of the left-back has surfaced.

Leeds are anticipated to make a few additions before the end of the January transfer window, with Daniel Farke stating that he wants to reinforce three positions this month: striker, no.10, and centre-back.

However, a left-back was reportedly not on Leeds’ radar in the final days of the transfer window. In the recent several windows, Leeds have waited until the final few days before bringing in fresh arrivals, like Ao Tanaka.

With the deadline coming on Monday, Leeds have made an inquiry about signing Matt Targett. After being sidelined with an injury, the left-back has made only two appearances for Newcastle so far this season.

Newcastle United’s position on selling Matt Targett to Leeds.

Targett is a seasoned Premier League left-back who was signed for £15 million by Newcastle and rated as “outstanding” by Eddie Howe, according to Sky Sports. However, Leeds do not require a new left-back.

But this could change. Junior Firpo and Sam Byram are both out of contract this summer, and Firpo has plenty of fans. Real Betis is leading the hunt for Firpo, while Besiktas is also interested in the defender.

In the last days of the window, everything is possible. Betis, led by Marc Roca and Diego Llorente, may attempt to raid Leeds for Firpo, leaving the Whites in need of a new left-back before the deadline on Monday.

Newcastle World has now revealed the Toon’s stance on selling Targett. Indeed, they claim Newcastle are ‘open to offers’ for Targett in the coming days, as his time at the club is certainly coming to an end.

How much does Newcastle expert think Matt Targett would cost?

Amid the ties between Leeds and Targett, LeedsUnited.News spoke with Newcastle specialist and Geordie Boot Boys writer James Rutherford about Targett’s probable move from Tyneside to Yorkshire.

He claims that if Leeds confirms their interest, a move would cost between £7m and £10m, even if it is only speculation: “He is not going to command a huge fee – maybe somewhere between £7m and £10m.”

Targett, who has previously been linked with Leeds, may be the subject of an enquiry from The Whites now, although it may be until the summer before Leeds confirms their interest – depending on Firpo’s future.
