Leeds United are leading the fight to capture ‘one of the greatest’ Championship players during the summer transfer window.
The Whites just lost out on automatic promotion last season, so Daniel Farke will need to finish in the top two this time around.
They’ve had a promising start to the transfer window, signing Jayden Bogle from Sheffield United for £5 million.
They have now switched their attention to an attacker, with Crystal Palace’s Jerusun Rak-Sakyi having recently been connected.
However, it appears that a move for a highly regarded Championship player is farther advanced at this time.
Leeds frontrunners to sign Sammie Szmodics.
According to The Mirror, Leeds United is interested in signing Blackburn Rovers offensive midfielder Sammie Szmodics.
The West Yorkshire club is considered to be leading the chase for his signature, alongside Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town.
Szmodics had a successful season last year, scoring 27 league goals and winning the Golden Boot.
Rovers are anxious to keep him at Ewood Park beyond the summer and have offered him a substantial salary package.
The 28-year-old’s contract runs until 2026.
Peterborough’s owner claims Szmodics would guarantee promotion.
Szmodics, who is now considered ‘one of the top players’ in the Championship by Bristol Live, honed his skills at Peterborough United before joining Rovers.
Darragh MacAnthony, his previous owner, recently said that if the Ireland international moved to Elland Road, Leeds would almost certainly win promotion.
“Sammie, if I was Leeds United, because they are going to lose some talent, doing what they have to do to bring in,” MacAnthony told the Peterborough United website.
“He’s pretty much guaranteeing you a promotion because you’re purchasing the Golden Boot winner. That’s my advice for Leeds fans: buy Sammie Szmodics. “Sorry, Blackburn fans.”
