Newcastle United are pushing ahead with their summer transfer plans, with a right winger being a top priority.
Newcastle’s right-wing was already a troublesome area, but in January, they traded one of their two recognised right-sided wingers, Miguel Almiron, leaving only Jacob Murphy as a natural fit for the position for the rest of the season.
Fortunately, Murphy found his form at the perfect time, but whether it will be enough to get him through the rest of the season remains to be seen.
Newcastle already has a large number of players on their shortlist, but we’re convinced that we don’t know half of them.
Marcus Tavernier could prove to be the most cost-effective choice for Newcastle United this summer.
According to The Boot Room, Newcastle have stepped up their interest in Bournemouth winger Marcus Tavernier, who cost the Cherries under £10 million in 2022.
Tavernier was briefly on Newcastle’s books as a youth before moving to Middlesbrough, although his brother James stayed on Tyneside.
Newcastle’s interest in Tavernier is not new, but it appears that he is moving up the club’s list of potential targets, and we are confident that Tavernier would welcome a return home.
Bryan Mbeumo is probably Newcastle’s priority for right-wing.
We expect Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo to remain at the top of the pile, but PSV’s Johan Bakayoko will be a close second, and it appears Tavernier may be moving up the rankings.
Tavernier’s signing may not exactly make the fans chant in the streets, but he might be a quality and potentially cost-effective addition to a squad in desperate need of an overhaul this summer.
So many players are required, but PSR will continue to impede progress, making it doubtful that the Magpies will make any major deals, preferring to make a series of low-cost acquisitions. We only hope it isn’t a matter of quantity over quality, since it would be a step back for the club. Free transfers may be the way to go this summer – Jonathan David, anyone?
