Leeds United aren’t having much luck in this January transfer window. They’re definitely eager on signing some new players given links to a plethora of names, but most of them seem to be moving elsewhere in Europe.
Daniel Farke’s team returned to winning ways over the weekend. Leeds United defeated Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 to reclaim the Championship lead and record their first league win of 2025.
It was a relatively convincing victory over a quality Owls side. However, Farke and the fans are well aware that the second half of the season will be exceedingly difficult, with new additions likely to make the difference between those vying for promotion.
Sheffield United are now expected to sign Tom Cannon, while Enzo Le Fee has joined Sunderland, with Burnley also trying to make additions. Leeds, however, has remained quiet in the transfer market.
There are more and more players being associated with a move to Leeds United, but many of these links fade when other teams enter the race and make more definite moves than Leeds.
Race to sign Leeds United target Mergim Berisha heats up
One such player who might fall into the category of players linked with a move to Elland Road, but eventually move elsewhere, is Mergim Berisha. Former German international Berisha has been told he can leave Hoffenheim in January.
The 26-year-old striker is valued at £5.6 million, but new sources indicate that Augsburg intends to re-sign Berisha during the January transfer window, which might spell the end of Leeds’ chase.
Now there’s more awful news. According to German outlet Kicker, another Bundesliga club is interested in Berisha, with Union Berlin the most likely candidate.
Mergim Berisha might be the second Leeds striker target to move elsewhere.
Berisha would not be the first player to agree to a move abroad during the January transfer window.
Earlier in January, it was disclosed that Atlanta United had agreed to recruit Emmanuel Latte Lath, a target of the 49ers.
Given the links, it appears that Farke wants to recruit a new striker, although claiming that he is content with Joel Piroe and Mateo Joseph as his only fit options for now.
Leeds United return to Championship action against Norwich City on Wednesday night, with a 7:45pm kickoff against Farke’s former club.
