Newcastle United will try to sign a winger during the summer transfer season.
After Miguel Almiron returned to Atlanta United in January, Newcastle United will be left with one natural right winger and numerous makeshift options for the rest of the season.
The decision, pushed by PSR, was designed to put the Magpies in a better financial position to spend over the summer.
Newcastle has identified PSV Eindhoven’s Johan Bakayoko as a potential transfer target. A January transfer was not viable, but Newcastle will try to recruit Bakayoko in the summer.
The 21-year-old has had a fantastic season across all competitions, scoring 10 goals and assisting three times, including a Champions League goal against Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Despite the interest in January, Bakayoko’s agent ruled out a move to Newcastle and announced he will remain with the club until the end of the season.
With his transfer speculation heating up, Bakayoko has made a major decision about his future that might have significant consequences for Newcastle.
Johan Bakayoko considering Premier League move amid Newcastle rumours
Newcastle are not the only club hoping to recruit Bakayoko this summer. Liverpool want to sign Bakayoko, who may cost around £40 million. The 21-year-old has a year left on his contract, but Bakayoko turned down PSV’s recent contract offer in lieu of a summer transfer abroad.
According to CaughtOffside, Bakayoko wants to transfer to England in the summer, which boosts Newcastle’s chances of signing him.
According to the source, Liverpool and Arsenal are potential suitors for Bakayoko, but Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are also interested in the Belgian international.
Liverpool are looking for a replacement for Mohamed Salah, and they believe Bakayoko is the best option. The Reds signed Newcastle target Federico Chiesa in the summer, but it does not appear to have been a fruitful transfer.
Bakayoko has been compared to Allan Saint-Maximin, but the Belgian is said to produce’more end product’ than the former Newcastle player.
Johan Bakayoko’s numbers compared to Jacob Murphy at Newcastle.
Murphy, like Bakayoko, has had a tremendous season. The 29-year-old has already surpassed his highest attacking return in the Premier League and helped Newcastle reach the Carabao Cup final.
This season, the majority of his goal involvements have come from assists; Murphy has eight league assists so far this season, the most he has ever had for the Magpies.
Murphy must maintain his purple patch while avoiding injury until the end of the season. He is Eddie Howe’s only natural right-wing option now that Almiron has left Newcastle.
At 29, Murphy may have one more chance to impress before Paul Mitchell gets a new winger, and he has done a fantastic job of showing himself this season.
