Liverpool would make a “bold move” by appointing. Journalist Neil Jones has named Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement at Anfield.
The Reds are entering a new era, with Klopp declaring that he will leave his current position as head coach at the end of the 2023/24 season.
Liverpool has been connected with a number of managerial successors, including Ruben Amorim and Arne Slot, but O’Neil appears to be the latest in a long line of possible candidates. The Englishman is having a fantastic season in charge of Wolves, having led them to mathematical Premier League safety before mid-April.
Liverpool interviews O’Neil.
The Wolves manager has won plaudits at Molineux.
According to DaveOCKOP, Gary O’Neil has been interviewed for the Liverpool head coach position, which will open when Jurgen Klopp steps down at the end of the season. The 40-year-old is currently in charge of Wolves, where he hopes to guide the team to a top-half finish this season
O’Neil formerly served as a coach for Liverpool’s junior teams before joining Scott Parker at AFC Bournemouth, eventually taking over as the Cherries’ head coach after the former was fired in August 2022. O’Neil was fired by the Reds’ incoming sports director after leading the south coast club to safety before taking over as manager of Wolves.
When asked about O’Neil’s probable employment at Wolves, journalist Neil Jones stated that it would be a brave move by both the manager and the club on The Redmen TV. Jones has also discussed the relationship between the potential head coach and the Reds board, and believes it is too early for both parties to collaborate:
“The relationships are interesting. There’s a Portsmouth connection with Michael Edwards and David Woodfine. However, Richard Hughes, Bournemouth’s technical director, declined to hire him and instead appointed Andoni Iraola. There is no guarantee that simply because they are amicable, it will be a ‘jobs for the guys’ type situation. Hughes has demonstrated in the past that this is not the case. I believe O’Neil has the potential to be a fascinating candidate in the future, but doing so would be a very brave move on the part of Liverpool and himself. I think it is too soon.”
Paulo Fonseca, a ‘fresh name’ on Liverpool’s shortlist
The Lille manager reportedly held ‘brief talks’.
According to sources, Liverpool are fans of Lille boss Paulo Fonseca. The 51-year-old is thought to have been in informal talks at Anfield as the Reds look for a replacement for Jurgen Klopp, who is leaving Merseyside after more than eight years in command of the Premier League giants.
Fonseca has had a successful managerial career on the continent, leading major European clubs such as Shakhtar Donetsk, AS Roma, and now Lille. The Ligue 1 side captivated British spectators with their Europa Conference League quarter-final match against Aston Villa, but they were unfortunate to lose on penalties to Unai Emery’s team.
